FrontRow Newsroom

Deaf History Month and FrontRow

13 March 2017|Hannah Olson

Though today we build technology to serve the broad communication needs of all students and school staff, FrontRow began life in 1963 as Phonic Ear, a company focused on the needs of students with hearing impairment and their parents, audiologists, speech-language pathologists, and teachers of the deaf and hard-of-hearing.

It was through our dedicated work within those communities that we pioneered the use of wireless audio technology in the classroom. It was also through the encouragement of dedicated hearing health professionals that we developed listening solutions for the student body at large. We wouldn’t be where we are today without all of you.

During Deaf History Month, we salute all – regardless of hearing ability -- who work to improve communication among people and to positively influence the educational outcomes of students everywhere. Some key events that occurred during deaf history month include:

  • March 13, 1988 – “Deaf President Now” movement succeeds. King Jordan became president of Gallaudet University.
  • April 8, 1864 - Gallaudet University founded. President Lincoln signed the charter establishing a college for the deaf. This event is known as Gallaudet Charter Day, and is usually marked with a luncheon and awards program at Gallaudet University.
  • April 15, 1817 - American School for the Deaf, the first public school for deaf, opened.

As a proud member of the William Demant family of companies, we join in observing and celebrating Deaf History Month. Our appreciation for our roots in hearing technology is deep, as it opened doors for us to impact not only the lives of those working with the deaf or those living with deafness, but also millions of lives outside those groups.
